(It's finally here, better late than never! This will probably be the last time I write these walls of text for a long while, I hope for more action soon. Figuring out the mission took a lot of time so that's my excuse, hopefully it was worth the weight.)
“Now I'm curious Mike, were'd you find these guys?”, Fontane asked as he walked to his desk.
“I don't think you want to know, and it's not really important right now.” Jensen answered. “But they'll get the job done.”
“I don't doubt it, but that's not what I was concerned about.” Fontane sat down at his chair and casually pressed a button on the desk to close the drapes of the large windows to his left, it was getting dark outside and he didn't like people seeing in. He then put his hands together. “In this world, if you want to get somewhere and influence things, it's not about brute force, or smarts, or magic or even money... It's about having the right connections and knowing how to use them. So when you sit in my office and ask for my services, I expect that you will show at least a minimal amount of decency and respect.” He directed his words to Akira and and gave him a frowned look. “I say the word and I can make sure that every cop, mobster, street thug and merc in the city will want a piece of you're head.” Fontane made a short pause and switched to speaking in a lighter tone. “But I like your attitude, you've got a lot of guts and you're gonna need it for this job. So here's what I'm offering for you and Blaze: 65 grand each and I'll throw in whatever you need for those arms as a bonus. As for you Mike... I'm counting this as a favor on your part.”
“Fair enough, I wouldn't feel right taking money from you anyway. Like I said, all I want is a steady supply of scraps and materials, for science of course”, Jensen said determined.
“Of course, now if we're all agreed on the terms then let's cut to the chase. Take a look at this.” Fontane opened a drawer on his desk and took out a folded newspaper which he threw over to Jensen.
“UFO landing in Mount-Tontra forest? You buy this crap?”
“You'd be surprised how much you can learn from the tabloids”, Fontane answered. “You heard about that chemical leak from the power plant a few months back? The entire forest's been shut down ever since for anyone but the police and the cleanup crew. However, I've got an inside man saying the whole thing is just a cover story.”
“Who's handling the cleanup, government?” Jensen asked.
“No, private sector, some corporation... H-something.”
“Horizonte?
“Yeah, it's something like that, I always forget”, Fontane answered. “Whoever they are, they must of payed off a lot of officials keep this quiet.”
Until now, Jensen was getting a little annoyed over how Fontane continued to draw everything out and had still not said what the actual job was. But now that Horizon was involved, he became more interested in the details.
“Go on”, he said, “So what's the cover story for?”
“My inside guy is with the police keeping the place closed up, they don't go inside the woods because of the 'radiation'. But he tells me they've been bringing in a lot of heavy lift gear. I don't know if their salvaging UFO's or digging up dinosaurs, but whatever they found I know it's big and important. The trucks containing the supposed nuclear waste have been going to their storage facilities outside town, but my guy saw found one of the trucks driving into town instead. He traced it to their main research facility in south Tontra. Now take a look at this one.” Fontane threw yet another newspaper over to Jensen who quickly skimmed through it.
“I know about this, the science and art gala is in a few days. I used to go to these, but I didn't know they were holding it there this year...”, Jensen summarized the text to himself as he kept reading. “This year Horizonte's research division is apparently announcing major breakthroughs in magicology, the whole town's gonna be there.”
“That's right, and whatever they found in the woods, they're gonna be keeping it at the basement of the research facility while the party's going on on the fourth floor and the roof above. I managed to get a hold of the blueprints.”
“Ok, I get the picture now. Basically you just want us to steal that thing, but why? Do you even know what it is... and why do you care?”, Jensen asked.
“I've got my suspicions and my reasons, but that's only one part of the job. You have to do another thing too”, Fontane pointed at the article before he continued, “Did you read the last part? Mayor Santiago is going to be at the gala holding a speech. And just before you steal that object, I want you to take out the Mayor.”
“Take out the Mayor! Are you nuts?”
He expected that Fontane would ask him to do something of the sort, but assassinating the Mayor himself came as a surprise. It felt out of place for Fontane to go that high up. Jensen's previous enthusiasm over the job was gone, mindless violence was something he usually didn't approved of.
“Why do you want him dead?”
“Everyone wants him dead, Mike! He's a corrupt-sorry-excuse for a Mayor who sells himself out like a cheap hooker. You know what he did?” Fontane asked rhetorically, “You know the Yakuza have a lot of high connections with the high end corporations in town, and those corporations have a lot of connections with the Mayor's administration. So Santiago's been keeping most cops out of the north side, and the Yakuza are free to run their business there with no competition and without having to worry about the police. They've turned the place into a criminal hell hole now thanks to that scum. I know that sounds hypocritical but those Japanese mobsters are freaks, they talk a lot of sh*t about their code of honor or whatever, but really they're just animals.”
“You can't prove he's involved in any of that.”, Jensen said insecure, feeling like he was just playing devil's advocate. He knew the mayor was corrupt but he would prefer not to kill him.
“Tell me this then Mike, if you really were framed, don't you think it was a little convenient how all the evidence pointed perfectly at you? If it was a setup, don't you think something must have slipped by? Even professionals make mistakes, or leave traces. Let's say a investigator finds something that points to someone else, DNA, hair, a suspected murder weapon. How easy wouldn't it be for someone like Santiago to get that evidence destroyed?”
“What the hell are you saying?” Jensen asked and frowned his eyebrows.
“I'm saying you need to stop being so naive. I gave you the benefit of the doubt back in the day, but by now, you of all people should know that sometimes you need get your hands dirty to get justice.”
“Fine”, Jensen said cold, he didn't have the patience to argue anymore and just wanted to get it over with instead. ”So you want us to steal that object and assassinate the Mayor? How do you expect us to do that exactly?”
“Well that's your problem isn't it? But don't worry though, I have most of it figured out already. Everyone listen up closely now”, Fontane said and rolled out the blueprints of the building on his desk. “The research center is built on an old foundation, so it has a sewer tunnel leading right into it. It's sealed, but not guarded, they have those sewer magi-freaks to do that for them.”
“That tunnels 1 kilometer long, that's practically a suicide mission.” Jensen remembered his previous encounters with the Corrupted, he was not looking forward to going through more dark, narrow tunnels.
“A great opportunity to show you're not all talk. Besides, the new weapons I got downstairs should even the odds a little, you can take anything you need and I'll even let you keep it. Sound good? Ok, so once you've reached the end of the sewer, you just get the hatch opened and you're in. I had an expert analyze the blueprints and they should be holding the object in this room.” Fontane pointed the room out before he carried on with explaining his plan. “Now it's most likely going to have high security guarding it, so taking the guards out quietly might be a challenge. After that there's a chance you'll find a way to deactivate the security measures, but I can't offer much details on this part to be honest. If you can't shut the alarm off, or get the doors open, then do it by force, grab the object and get the hell out of there before any more guards show up, same way you came in.”
“That's your plan?” Jensen said, trying to not sound too condescending. “We just go in and wing it? You don't even know what kind of security they have!”
“I'll admit it involves a lot of improvisation, but to be fair I doubt that they're expecting someone to steal it. As far as they know, it's just their little secret. But... the second part of the plan is what might make things complicated. While part of the group works on getting a hold of that object, I'll need someone to infiltrate the party upstairs as a guest. He needs to blend in with the crowd until it's time for Mayor Santiago's speech. I would prefer if he makes the kill shot once the Mayor is on the stage babbling, I want to be able to see it on the 10 o'clock news. How you do it or how you get in is up to you, I've got nothing planned yet. But here come's the important part so pay attention. It's extremely important that you all synchronize the time to steal the object and the time you take out the Mayor. If you grab the object too early the alarm might go off in the whole building and his bodyguards will get him out of there in no time, and if you kill him to soon then security is gonna be all over you before you can grab it and get out. So long story short: get to the object just before the Mayor's speech. Steal it and take him out at the same time, and then get out. The question now is, who is going to go fight their way through the sewers and who's going to the party?
“I wouldn't mind eating shrimps and mingling while everyone else does the hard work, but I have too much heat. Everyone would recognize me there. Besides I think I'm more needed when it comes to dealing with the security measures. I'll send my drones in to give you tech support and help deal with the hostiles, from the outside. I'll be able to keep everyone synched and updated much better if I don't have to worry about other distractions.”
Fontane accepted Jensen's suggestion with a nod and turned to Akira and Blaze.
“That leaves you two. Dealing with the sewers and the guards is going to take a lot of force and finesse, but dealing with the Mayor is going to take a lot of thought and discretion. So who's doing what?”
(Btw, this is just the background and the plan for this mission, but how it goes and what happens is completely up to what you guys feel in the moment, I wont be leading as much from now on. Anything could happen, hopefully a lot of action!
